Grocery Shopping on a Budget

(Excerpt from "everydayhealth.com")

Grocery Shopping on a Budget: 9 Ways to Shop Healthy and Save Money

  1. Plan, plan, plan. “If a family or head of household can take an hour to plan a week’s worth of meals and make a grocery shopping list and another hour to grocery shop, then the family can be good for a week,” says Shelley A. Rael, RD, a registered dietitian and health education consultant at the University of New Mexico’s Employee Health Promotion Program in Albuquerque. This is a win-win situation as food prepared at home is generally healthyand less expensive.
  2. Buy in bulk. Whether it’s choosing a “family size” pack of skinless chicken breasts and freezing what you don’t use right away or one large container of nonfat yogurt instead of individual servings, buying big can equal big savings.
  3. Cut those coupons. “Clipping coupons and shopping sales will never go out of style, especially when there are many mouths to feed,” says Amy Berns, RD, a registered dietitian with Medical Network One’s Michigan Institute for Health Enhancement in Trenton. Coupons are everywhere these days, from local flyers to the Internet. Check individual food companies’ Web sites for discounts, rebates, and coupons you can print yourself.
  4. Shop the perimeter of the store. Most stores are organized with packaged foods in the middle. As much as possible, stick to the outer areas where you can find the healthier fruits and vegetables, meat, and dairy. Also, while these foods may seem expensive, be sure to consider actual serving sizes and how many meals you can get from one purchase. “Produce may appear expensive at the outset,” says Rael, “but it can be part of a meal or a snack. Many people see ‘$3.99 per pound,’ but don’t think about how that pound could potentially be spread across several meals or people.”

Curious about buying organic produce? Find out if these foods are worth the cost.
  5. Try some substitutions. Instead of expensive and less healthy beef, buy more chicken and pork. Beans are another good source of protein and are usually much cheaper than meat. Fish can be bought frozen or canned to cut down on cost as well.
  6. Try the “IKEA” style of eating. That means “some assembly required,” says Ashley Koff, RD, a registered dietitian in private practice in Los Angeles. “Rather than buying the salad already made, buy the pieces and assemble it yourself. Instead of the ready-to-eat pasta dish, buy the sauce, the cheese, the meatballs, and some organic frozen vegetables.” Not only is it less expensive to purchase items individually, but you will also be avoiding the preservatives used to increase a packaged food’s shelf life.
  7. Skip the snack foods. Products like chips, cookies, and soda are unhealthy and represent an unnecessary expense for shoppers looking to save money. Popcorn, dried fruits, and nuts are good, nutritious substitutions for chips.
  8. Go local and buy in-season. “Look for fresh local and in-season produce as this is usually more affordable than choosing imported produce,” says Erin Palinski, RD, a registered dietitian in private practice in northern New Jersey. “If fresh produce seems too expensive, try choosing frozen or canned. It is more affordable and has a longer shelf life. To cut down on the sodium content of canned vegetables, try rinsing them before cooking and serving.”
  9. Be creative. Whether it’s trying a new recipe with ingredients bought using coupons or putting a new twist on an old favorite, shopping and preparing different foods can be fun.

Calendula

My daughter has had awful dry skin/eczema since birth (literally). I've tried everything from baby lotion, shea butter, olive oil, coconut oil, Eucerin cream, etc... and NOTHING has been as effective as CALENDULA cream!!! I purchased this from a local Mother's Market. The brand name is Weleda, but I'm sure there are other brands that make lotion/cream/oil with CALENDULA (a type of flower). If you have kiddos that have eczema or have extremely dry skin.. try this!!

Good For Your Health

Rick Warren wrote a devotional about good health. A healthy life is balanced with good eating and strong faith. Here's an excerpt from his devotional:

Trusting God is good for your health. "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding" (Proverbs 3:5 NIV). Why is trusting in God good for your health? When you trust Him then you don't worry.
Psalm 116:7 says, "I said to myself, 'Relax, the Lord is going to take care of you'" (NCV). If you really trust in God, you're going to be less stressed.
You have a choice -
You can either worry or worship
You can either pray or panic
The more you'll pray the less you'll panic. Relax, because God will take care of you! The Bible says in Proverbs 14:30, "A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones" (NIV). It's not just what you eat that matters, it's what eats you. You can have all the right macrobiotics and organic food, but if your body is filled with resentment, worry, fear, lust, guilt, anger bitterness, or any other emotional disease, it's going to shorten your life.

God is sovereign. Replace fear and worry with thoughts of the greatness of God and how much He loves you and wants to take care of you.

Tone It Up!

When people talk about working out, I laugh and think to myself, when would I ever have the time or energy to workout?! If I have any spare time, I would like to rest. Working out is not appealing to me at all. But then I read that women lose muscle mass every year, especially after having children. So I considered some sort of exercise. I've been hearing a lot of good things about this workout video by Jillian Michaels called the 30 Day Shred. I had a friend try it with me, and I was surprised how totally doable it was! There are 3 levels --(I'm still on level 1!) Jillian Michaels begins with warm ups, then cardio, muscle toning and strength. Not bad in 20 minutes. It didn't feel rushed or over the top. Afterwards, I felt light, energized and optimistic. If you'd like to check it out, Target carries the DVD in the sporting goods section for $9.00.

YIKES! LICE!

YIKES!! LICE!!

Unfortunately, I've had to learn A LOT about lice during the last 24 hours since discovering one in my daughter's hair. I've never had lice nor have I known anyone that has had lice... so although the possibility of my daughter having lice crossed my mind when I would see her scratching her head... but I was ruling out other possibilities first... sunburn? shampoo? dry scalp? etc.. Well, now that I have plenty of knowledge (again, unfortunately) I would like to inform you as to what you should look out for, and how best to treat it.

Lice eggs look very similar to dandruff... so when we saw these tiny white things in her hair, we (my husband and I) figured they were dandruff from her scratching her scalp so much...

"Nits are often difficult to distinguish from normal dandruff in the hair shaft. One way to tell is that dandruff will easily slide off the hair with your fingers, whereas nits are glued to the hair shaft and are not easily moved." -Dr Sears

So... if you see these stinkers.. you know that the lice has laid eggs and you need to get moving!

Another thing to look for (other than, ITCHY and NITS) are the actual LIVE LYMPHS or ADULT LICE. For some reason, I thought lice were almost microscopic, but they can be easily seen with the naked eye (we found an adult lice and compared it with the photo above).

"Although they may sound gross, lice (the plural of louse) are a very common problem, especially for kids ages 3 years to 12 years (girls more often than boys). Lice aren't dangerous and they don't spread disease, but they are contagious and can just be downright annoying"- Kids Health from Nemours.

Thankfully, lice doesn't survive long once it falls off a person. "Adult lice can only live 1 or 2 days away from a warm body, and the eggs must be close to the warm scalp in order to hatch. They feed on human blood through tiny bites in the skin"-Dr Sears. It's not necessary to spend a great deal of time and money trying to rid the HOUSE of lice, but you still need to wash/clean all clothing, stuffed animals, upholstered furniture, rugs, etc.

TREATMENT:

-Over the counter medicated shampoos that are safe to use on children....see site.
-Homeopathic/non-medicated treatments (olive oil, mayonnaise, petroleum jelly, vinegar) that are messy so may not be suitable for young children.
-Nit removal combs. These are the BEST and NECESSARY to remove all lice and lice eggs from hair.

TRUTH ABOUT LICE & PREVENTION:

There is no real way to prevent your kids from getting lice.. they can easily get it from hanging around other kids at the park, church, etc (it's like catching a cold). This is why it is BEST if you know WHAT to look for, when your child is scratching his/her head (we learned our lesson).

Salt Water Gargle,

When you're feeling like you're coming down with something, like a cold with a scratchy throat, you've probably heard of the remedy to gargle warm salt water. However, did you know that the same harmful bacteria in your throat is also in your nose? Try using a Q-tip dipped in warm salt water to swab the inside of your nose and the salt water remedy will be more effective.

Aloe Vera Pizzaz!

Drinking aloe vera juice has many health benefits. It builds the immune system and helps with digestion. Check first with your doc if you're pregnant.

Here's a great description of aloe vera juice by the American Chronicle.
The health benefits of aloe vera taken internally include: improved circulation, regulation of blood pressure, promotes healing of bones and joints, strengthens the immune system, defends the body against bacteria, heals internal tissue damage, heals ulcers, improves and even eliminates constipation, blood sugar regulation, and reduces itchiness in psoriasis helping it to heal. Drinking two to four ounces a day is all that is required to gain the many benefits of aloe vera juice. If you drink it daily, aloe vera can aid your digestion, improve your circulation and detoxify your body and cleanse your colon. One of the most important health benefits of aloe vera juice is its operation as an anti-bacterial and anti-fungal agent, helping to prevent the onset of disease in the body. Thus, taking aloe vera juice daily helps to maintain good health and provide a sense of wellbeing and energy.

It's great to see how God provides healing and wellness through his creation. This aloe vera plant is packed with delicious goodness! Just what a parent needs to start the day!

Husband's Health

Recently, my husband has been dealing with health concerns that have been consuming him and also distracting him from the things that he wants/needs to focus on. As he is going through this, God has been teaching me to pray more fervently for his health (which is good because we're both aging quickly and I need to learn how to pray for his health more effectively).

Whether your husband is dealing with mental health issues, chronic pain, diabetes, bad diet, etc.. as wives, we all need to pray perseveringly for their health.

Below is a prayer written by Stormie Omartian in "The Power of a Praying Wife" (chapter 11- His Health).

Lord, I pray for Your healing touch on (husband's name). Make every part of his body function the way You designed it to. Wherever there is anything out of balance, set it in perfect working order. Heal him of any disease, illness, injury, infirmity, or weakness. Strengthen his body to successfully endure his workload, and when he sleeps may he wake up completely rested, rejuvenated and refreshed. Give him a strong heart that doesn't fail. I don't want him to have heart failure at any time.

I pray that he will have the desire to take care of his body, to eat the kind of food that brings health, to get regular exercise, and avoid anything that would be harmful to him. Help him to understand that his body is Your temple and that he should care for it s such (1 Corinthians 3:16). I pray that he will present it as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to You (Romans 12:1).

When he is ill, I pray that You will sustain him and heal him. Fill him with your joy to give him strength. Specifically, I pray for (mention any area of concern). Give him faith to say, "'O Lord my God, I cried out to You, and You healed me' (Pslam 30:2). Thank you Lord that You are my Healer." I pray that my husband will live a long and healthy life and when death does come, may it be accompanied by peace and not unbearable suffering agony. Thank you, Lord, that You will be there to welcome him into Your presence, and not a moment before Your appointed hour.

Probiotics

With flu season just around the corner, none of us are looking forward to our kids catching some kind of bug/illness from the park, store, daycare, church, etc. We can only do so much to wash and wipe their hands when they are out and about... but what we can do is to help boost their immune system to fight the bacteria.

Most of us know that sleep and diet are major factors in strengthening our immune system... but probiotics is another way to ensure good health. Probiotics are ”good” bacteria that are ingested in some fermented foods (like yogurt) or via pill, powder or liquid supplement. These health-promoting, live bacteria take up residence in the stomach to keep bad bacteria in check.

According to Dr. Sears, probiotics:
-Boost intestinal immunity
-Promote a healthy gut environment
-Reduce intestinal allergies
-Produce healthful nutrients

Breastfeeding automatically promotes the development of healthy bacteria. But you are giving your baby formula, or would like to give probiotics to you baby in addition to the breastmilk, there are brands out there that are for children ages 0+ (such as this one below).

Nipple Trauma

This concept may be unfamiliar to some mothers, and yet all TOO familiar to other mothers. Unfortunately, I belong in the latter group. Here are some symptoms to tell if you're experiencing nipple trauma and also some techniques to help ease the pain.

Symptoms

  • Sore, cracked, bleeding, or blistered nipples
  • Contact with bra/clothing is too painful
  • Pain during and after baby has nursed
  • A jumping-back reaction when baby comes close to latch for breastfeeding

Helpful Techniques
  • Hydrogels like Ameda ComfortGel Hydrogel Nipple Pads
  • Lanolin ointment
  • Expressed breast milk applied to nipple area
  • Nipple shields
  • Breast shells to reduce nipple irritation by preventing friction against clothing
  • Warm Compress
  • Pumping milk and bottle feeding temporarily while nipples heal

Nipple trauma is often caused by improper positioning and latch-on. If pain persists, lactation consultants can help. They are very helpful, understanding and supportive. They will really address your personal needs. I sought one within two weeks of giving birth. I was provided instant relief to soothe the pain. And the consultant worked diligently with me and my baby to get me on my way to healing and recovery. I was soon breastfeeding comfortably and with ease. I can attest that there's hope for us mothers suffering with nipple trauma!

More Energy... Please!

Every ounce of energy helps when you're a mom... so I wanted to share with you this great supplement that my mother-in-law told me about.

I have been taking this Energizing Iron by Enzymatic Therapy since I was pregnant with my second child... and honestly, I've noticed a significant increase in my energy level.

What is special about this supplement?

-It provides enhanced endurance and energy

-Energizing Iron is a source of nutrients to support the body's need for iron, vitamin B12, and trace minerals.

-The iron found in this supplement is heme iron - easily absorbed by the body and more gentle on the stomach than other supplemental iron forms.

-Produced from beef liver obtained from animals raised in Argentina, Energizing Iron contains no chemical sprays, pesticides, or antibiotics from livestock feed.

-Vitamin B12 - the energy vitamin - helps form red blood cells and maintain the central nervous system.

You don't have to be anemic to take iron supplements, but you must consult your doctor/OB/midwife before taking them.

Baby Kit

If you are at all leery about giving over-the-counter medication to your newborn, try homeopathic tablets! They are easy to administer, there are no side-effects, and they are yummy (or at least that's what my 2 year old says).

I am fortunate to have a relative who is a homeopathic physician. While I was pregnant, she had a great list of homeopathic medicines to have on hand for my newborn.

Allium Cepa: for runny nose when trying to get over a cold.

Calcarea Phosphate: teething and growing pains (this is one of the ingredients in Hylands teething tablets).

Belladonna: for fevers and inflammation.

Bryonia Alba: for crankiness and irritability(the label says for Dry Cough and Arthritis Pains) but really it helps a much wider spectrum, to long to put on the title).

Carbo Veg: indigestion or tummy ache.

Apis Mell: for bug bites or minor rashes caused by an allergic reaction.

Chamomilla: for irritability, restlessness, sleeplessness. This is also great for calming children while traveling on airplanes.

Arnica Montana: for bruises and muscle soreness for kids and also for moms -especially after giving birth to help with healing and swelling.

These work for babies, toddlers and adults and can be purchased at Whole Foods and most health food stores. Hylands is a trusted brand and is recommended by Dr. Sears .

Talk about being FEARFUL

We are living in a world filled with FEAR as we speak.

Today's US and world news report that "governments are racing to find and contain pockets of swine flu around the globe, seeking to stem both the threat of a pandemic and public panic." As the world is in a state of unknown, we can either freeze in fear or take action and do what we can to prevent ourselves and our children from getting this possibly deadly flu. It is also a good idea to prepare our home for a possible pandemic. Check out Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Below are some helpful info from the site.

10 Ways to Prevent Swine Flu

1. Wash your hands
2. Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer
3. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
4. Limit your exposure to those who have flu symptoms.
5. Stay home if experiencing flu symptoms
6. Take Vitamin C
7. Rest and eat balanced diet
8. Make sure you're helping your children follow the above habits
9. Routinely clean and disinfect
10. Immediately report to the doctor if you have any flu symptoms.

Preparing Your Home for Possible Pandemic
The CDC recommends stocking nonperishables such as:
—Canned foods
—Protein or fruit bars
—Dry cereal
—Dried fruit
—Bottled water
—Baby food
—Pet food

Other items to prepare: Cash, flashlights, batteries, portable radio, manual can opener, garbage bags, toilet paper, prescription drugs. Crackers, Gatorade, and other foods good for sickness. Don't forget diapers and wipes for your little ones!
